Rapid City Man Charged With Running Over His Brother Twice Makes Court Appearance

Loading

The man accused of killing his older brother by running over him twice Friday night in downtown Rapid City while they were drunk was back in court Tuesday.

34-year old Larry Walking of Rapid City is charged with vehicular homicide in the death of 47-year old Paul Walking of Pine Ridge. He also faces alternative counts of 4th offense drunk driving.

Prosecutors say a preliminary breath test at the scene put Walking’s blood-alcohol level at .278 – more than 3 times the legal limit. They also say he precipitated the incident by kicking his brother out of the car.

Investigators say that, based on witness statements and security video, the brothers were drinking in a parked car with a third person when Paul Walking got out and walked behind the vehicle.

Larry Walking is accused of then putting the car in reverse and backing over his brother, then putting it in drive and running over him again pulling forward. Paul Walking received emergency aid, but died at the scene.

Appearing in court by video feed from jail, Larry Walking told family members in the courtroom that he wanted to say he knew he’d hurt his family, but his attorney cut him off to avoid Walking making any incriminating statements.

Bond was set at $10,000 cash despite the defense asking for a $1,500 cash/surety bond. Walking was also admitted into the local 24/7 program.
