A shooting at the Central States Fairgrounds in Rapid City Sunday morning left the suspect dead and two other individuals in the hospital.
Acting OST Department of Public Safety Chief Ivan Crow Eagle III, said they received reports from authorities that the suspect involved in the fairgrounds shooting who was identified as John Troy Lee, 58, of Rapid City may have been in the Pine Ridge Reservation area and witnesses on the reservation reported seeing him there Sunday following the shooting.
Crow Eagle said officers found the suspect who opened fire on them as they approached him. One Department of Public Safety officer was hit by shots fired by Lee. The officers injuries were not considered life threatening. Other officers returned fire and Lee was pronounced dead at the scene.
Crow Eagle said anyone who thinks they can commit a crime and hide out on the reservation is wrong saying its not going to work as they work closely with other law enforcement agency’s both state and the FBI.
The name and condition of the victim shot at the fairgrounds has not been released.
The fairgrounds were closed Sunday causing the cancellation of the scheduled Sunday roping event.
