BILLINGS, Mont. โ Ashayla Powers recorded a 13-point, 11-rebound double-double, but the Chadron State women’s basketball team lost to Simon Fraser by an 81-55 margin to conclude the Yellowjacket Classic in Billings, Montana.
Powers, who earned a place on the classic’s All-Tournament Team after her double-double Saturday and 24-point night Friday, shot 4-for-9 from the field and 5-for-7 from the line while also recording a block and a steal. Allison Richards, who missed Friday’s game against nationally-ranked MSU Billings, also finished in double figures with 10.
The loss drops Chadron State to 0-3. Simon Fraser, who also beat the RMAC’s Colorado School of Mines on Friday, improved to 6-1 with the win.
The Red Leafs got production from their star Sophia Wisotzki, who entered the weekend as the sixth-leading scorer in Division II. Wisotzki picked up right where she left off, scoring 27 points on 8 of 20 shooting, hitting four threes. The 27 points are in line with Wisotzki’s average of 26.4 points per game.
Chadron State shot incredibly well from the free-throw line, making 22 of 24 attempts as a team. The Eagles struggled from three-point range, however, making just one of 16 attempts from beyond the arc.
Kyra Tanabe and Camren Morris scored seven points apiece for the Eagles, with Morris hitting Chadron State’s only three of the game. Bati Assefa had seven rebounds for CSC. Assefa and Kylie Krise had three assists apiece to share the team lead in that category.
Simon Fraser shot 39.7 percent from the field and 41.7 percent from three-point range. The Red Leafs won the rebounding battle, 40-35. The two teams tied with 30 points in the paint each. Chadron State committed 24 turnovers while forcing 11, while SFU converted those turnovers into 26 points.
Chadron State will now enter a stretch with three consecutive nonconference home games and four straight home games overall. The Eagles will host Southwest Minnesota State this Wednesday, November 20, and York University the following Monday, November 25. Both tipoffs will be at 6 p.m.
