Robert Duane Hanlon, or โ€œButch,โ€ passed away at his home on August 7, 2024, in Omaha, Nebraska. He was 77 years old. Born on July 17, 1947, in Alliance, Nebraska, Robert was a beloved family man, physician, and musician whose life was filled with passion and service.

Butchโ€™s experience of being hospitalized as a young child at University of Nebraska Medical Center led to a desire and commitment to helping others in the field of medicine. He graduated from Crawford High School in 1965, Chadron State College in 1969 and UNMC in 1973.

โ€œDocโ€ served as a family physician in Crawford, Chadron, and the surrounding rural communities for over 30 years. His work was more than just a career; it was his passion. He loved the relationships he built with families; becoming a trusted and integral part of their lives. His dedication to providing compassionate care left a lasting impact on the communities and families he served.

Butchโ€™s love for music was evident throughout his life. As a young man he joined members of the Horse family as a member of The Esquires; playing saxophone and touring small town bars. While practicing medicine, he took private lessons from a CSC faculty member, Carola Winkle and played in the Bordeaux Community Band. Upon retiring and moving to Omaha, he continued to share his musical talents with the Nebraska Wind Symphony, Omaha Symphonic Winds, Papillion Area Concert Band a saxophone quartet and a local polka band.

His joy for music was matched by his commitment to his community; Butch was an active member in his local Rotary chapter, served the Chadron State College Foundation Board for many years and was involved in a local scouting troop with his sons.

Robert was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Debra Hanlon. He is survived by his three children, Shane, Sara, and Skip, and his cherished grandchildren, Lily, Violet, Tyler, and McKinley.

A Celebration of Life be held on Sunday, September 1st at 1:00pm. at the CSC Student Center ballroom in Chadron, NE. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Chadron State College Foundation in Butchโ€™s honor, an entity close to his heart.
