SD Girls State Basketball: Lakota Tech, Red Cloud Fall In Openers

Rapid City Stevens won a cross town battle with Rapid City Central in the quarterfinals of the South Dakota girls Class AA state tournament 40-34.

Macey Wathen scored a game high 17 points, going 5-of-9 from behind the arc, to erase a 4th quarter deficit and send the Raiders to the semi’s against powerhouse Sioux Falls Washington. Central drops to the consolation semifinals against Sioux Falls Jefferson.

St. Thomas More outscored Lakota Tech by a point in both the 3rd and 4th quarters to grab a 37-35 quarterfinal win over the Tatanka in the Class A state tournament. It’s the first ever state appearance by Lakota Tech in just their 2nd year of existence.

Red Cloud blew a 12-point 4th quarter lead as Wagner outscored the Crusaders 22-4 in the final 8 minutes for a 68-62 win at the Class A state tourney. The loss spoiled a 23-point effort from Red Cloud’s Stevi Fallis.

Friday’s matchups will be St. Thomas More and Wagner in the semifinals and Lakota Tech versus Red Cloud in the consolation semi’s.

On January 15th Wall used a buzzer beater to knock off Faith in the West River championship, on Thursday night the Longhorns got payback as they blasted the Eagles 54-34 in the Class B girls tournament.

Wall shot a dismal 18% for the game and didn’t have a player make more than two shots.

Wall matches up with Aberdeen Christian in the consolation semifinals.
