SD ISSUES First Medical Pot Card

      South Dakota issued its first medical cannabis patient card on Thursday. The recipient is a Day County resident whose identity has not been released. 

      South Dakota Medical Cannabis Program Administrator Geno Adams issued a statement saying Thursday “marks the culmination of months of hard work in preparation for the kickoff of a responsive and efficient medical cannabis program.

      Smith said program officials will continue to ensure that eligible patients and their caregivers can continue to obtain medical marijuana in accordance with their written certifications. 

      The state has a site,, where patients, caregivers, and medical providers can find more information on the medical cannabis program. 

      The site features a ‘Frequently Asked Questions’ section, as well as a section for locations of medical cannabis establishments which is continuously updated by the state.

        South Dakota voters approved medical marijuana last November. A broader measure legalizing both medical and recreational pot also passed, but is currently tied up in the courts awaiting a ruling by the South Dakota Supreme Court.
