Season Ends On Day 1 Of National Tourney For CSC Women’s Wrestling

The Chadron State College women’s wrestling season officially ended on Friday evening when all four qualifiers for the 2024 National Collegiate Women’s Wrestling Championships in Cedar Rapids, Iowa were eliminated.
 
Despite having their seasons ended with two losses at the national tournament, the four national qualifiers were apart of an elite group of 240 wrestlers that qualified for the largest women’s wrestling championships in history.
 
The Eagles four qualifiers included Mana Chanthasone at 101 pounds, Heavynne Robles-Wright at 109 pounds, Ana Rojas-Zamora at 123 pounds and Kamila Montenegro at 191 pounds.
 
Chanthasone, a freshman from Liberal, Kansas, begin her day with a fall in 1:53 over Lexi Doerflinger of Hiram at 101 pounds. A matchup against #6 Jessica Corredor of King University was next on the card for the freshman. Corredor, who was defeated in the quarterfinals, won over Chanthasone with a 10-0 tech fall.
 
In her first consolation match, Samantha Yap of Sacred Heart scored a tech fall over Chanthasone to end her season.
 
At 109 pounds, Robles Wright, a sophomore from Las Cruces, New Mexico, was defeated with a 5-2 decision by #10 Emily Mendez of Adrian College in the round of 32. Riley Morrison of Trine was victorious over Robles-Wright by way of fall in the first round of the consolation bracket.
 
After scoring a four-point throw in the first 20 seconds of her match, Rojas Zamora was eventually defeated by Alyssa Mahan of Presbyterian by way of fall in the round of 32.
 
Sadly, Rojas-Zamora, a sophomore from Sweeny, Texas, was injured in the match and was unable to continue in the tournament.
 
Montenegro, a senior from Las Vegas, Nevada, and a three-time national qualifier was victorious in her first match at 191 pounds.
 
The senior upset #7 Madeline Hodges of Sacred Heart with a 3-1 decision in the round of 32 to advance in the tournament. In the round of 16, #5 Sydney Manos of Aurora College pinned Montenegro.
 
The loss sent Montenegro to the consolation bracket, where she was defeated by Makayla Rivera of Lindenwood University.
 
The loss ends Montenegro’s career as one of two regional champions in school history, the only three-time national qualifier in school history and the school’s all time leader in wins.
