The bipartisan federal debt limit bill signed Saturday morning by President Joe Biden showed a significant split among Republicans in the Senate, which passed it Thursday 63-36 after several amendments by both liberals and conservatives were defeated.
There were 31 Republicans voting against it, including Nebraska Senators Deb Fischer and Pete Ricketts and Wyoming’s John Barrasso and Cynthia Lummis.
South Dakota’s two GOP senators, Majority Whip John Thune and former governor Mike Rounds, both voted for it.
Virtually all senators from both parties said during debate that the legislation was far from perfect, but most opted to support it despite reservations over various provisions.Â
Many Republicans expressed frustration that the 102-page bill capped defense spending while Democrats lamented it makes changes to work requirements on some safety net programs.
