More than 3 years after he killed a man in a hit-and-run accident, a Rapid City man has finally been sentenced.
27-year old Zachary Fegueroa was given 15 years in prison with 1 year suspended and credit for just over 3 years time served.
In October, Fegueroa pleaded guilty but mentally ill to vehicular homicide in the Dec 2019 death of Joseph Martinez.
In exchange, the state dropped a number of other charges. The plea deal followed an evaluation that found Fegueroa has a developmental disability.
Several members of Martinez’s family spoke at Fegueroa’s sentencing with his wife saying, “These babies have to grow up without their dad.” Fegueroa also spoke, saying he was “very sorry” for what he did.
Fegueroa’s attorney said he hopes the Department of Corrections can find an appropriate facility with programs and services to help his client’s cognitive and mental health issues.
