Shirley Jean Salway was born to the late Marvin V and Wyomia L (Fay) Salway on November 28, 1946 in Pine Ridge, SD. Shirley passed away on November 15, 2022 at Saint Mary’s Hospital in Reno, NV.
Shirley spent her youth in Martin, SD, and the surrounding areas and grew to become a fiercely independent woman. After graduating high school and welcoming her two children into the world, Shirley moved to California to raise her young family.
The years following would eventually take her to Wyoming, where she was proud of her time working, as a small percentage of women, laying pipe for the Wyoming Pipeline and becoming the proud business owner of Merry Maids of Casper, WY.
A life changing injury led Shirley back to her home state of South Dakota to recuperate, surrounding herself with the love and support of her mother, Wyomia “Toots,” and sister, Patricia “Patty Jo”.
The final years of Shirley’s life were spent in the Reno/Sparks area where she worked for and retired from the State of Nevada. Shirley enjoyed the community she lived in and deeply treasured the friendships she cultivated over the years.
Her dear friend, Cindy Scaben, was the reason we had time together to share our mom’s final moments; for this we are forever grateful!
Shirley was an avid dog lover and leaves behind her two beloved mixed breed fur babies, Shadow and Murphy. Shirley never met a dog she did not love.
Shirley is survived by her children Virgil (Cercie) Usher and Wyomia (David) Crofcheck; grandchildren Arik Usher, Alex Usher, Teka (Elvir) Hrnjic, Sage (Alyssa) Crofcheck, and Seth (Halie) Crofcheck; and great-grandchildren Ronin, Malayne, Aiden, Nyle, Elias, and soon-to-be baby boy Hudson.
Shirley is also survived by her sister Orla Salway; nieces Kristine and Patty Jo; nephews Kurtis, Rudy, Robert, and Jesse; and great-nieces & nephews Anthony, Nathan, Nicole, Zahra, and Vlad.
Shirley was preceded in death by her parents Marvin & Wyomia (Fay) Salway; sisters Patricia (Salway) Krier and Sandra Salway; brothers Ashton Salway and Marvin Ritts; nephew Butch Schmerber; and great-granddaughter Baby Girl Laighla E Hrnjic.
