Chadron State College senior Grant Turek of St. Paul, Neb., missed the final fall rodeo in the Central Rocky Mountain Region last weekend, but it paid off handsomely for him.
Instead of going with the remainder of the CSC team to the Lamar College rodeo, Turek competed in tie down roping at the Badlands Circuit Finals in Minot, N.D., and won $3,899.
After not placing in the first go-round Friday, Turek won the second go-round Saturday by roping and tying his calf in 8.9 seconds. His time was even faster Sunday in the third go—8.2 seconds. However, Austin Hurlburt of Norfolk won it in 8.1 seconds and Turek was the runner-up.
Hurlburt also had placed third in both of the first two go-rounds and was the overall tie down winner, but Turek isn’t complaining. He had earned $2,228 for his second-round victory and another $1,671 for his third-round success. Not bad for a college student.
Turek also has done well on the college circuit this fall. He placed fourth in tie down roping at the CSC rodeo and joined with CSC junior Jake Chasek of Mitchell to win the team roping at the Sheridan College rodeo.
