Voters from across the state of South Dakota went to the ballot box Tuesday for the 2026 primary election. A 35% turnout rate with 171,729 of the 497,046 registered voters turning out to decide who will be on the November ballot for governor amongst other races.
The big ticket race was for the Republican spot on the November general election ballot with 35% of the vote required to avoid a run-off election in July. Toby Doeden was the highest vote-getter with 31% of the vote which means there will be a runoff election on July 28th where he will face off against incumbent Larry Rhoden who got 25% of the vote.
For congress it was a large win for Mike Rounds in the primary for the senate seat, getting 76% of the vote with Marty Jackley getting 79% of the vote in the primary for the United States House of Representatives.
Locally in District 30 which encompasses the far southwest corner of South Dakota Amber Hulse took 67% of the vote to move onto the general election for state senator while Tim R Goodwin with 39% and Trish Ladner with 36% will move onto the primary election for state representative seats.
