The Nebraska State Patrol says a South Dakota woman was killed Saturday evening when she was hit by a minivan on Hwy 87 in Sheridan County about 2 miles north of Rushville.

The State Patrol says 21-year old Arrow Merrita Long was walking in the northbound lane of the highway when she was struck.

The driver of the minivan told investigators that when they saw Long, they tried to slow down and avoid her but could. Long was pronounced dead at the scene while the driver and a passenger suffered minor injuries.

The Sheridan County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene first and contacted the State Patrol about 8:00 Saturday night. The accident remains under investigation.
