More exceptional times in the men’s sprints were among the highlights for the Chadron State College track and field teams on Saturday at the Blue Hawk Games at Dickinson State in North Dakota.
The Eagles’ Ryan Clapper and Quincy Efeturi were first and second in the 200 meters, both with top-five times all-time in Chadron State annuals.
Clapper, a redshirt freshman from Southwest High School at Yoder, Wyo., won the race in 21.05 seconds, the third fastest in CSC history. Efeturi, a sophomore from Nigeria, was second in 21.13, fifth best on the college’s chart.
Only Joel Duffield of Morrill in 2006 and Mike Smith of Arizona in 2008 have ever run the 200 faster than Clapper’s time Saturday. Clapper also took the lead in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference for this season.
Efeturi’s time is CSC’s fifth best all-time and is fourth on the RMAC chart at the mid-way point in the season.
Efeturi also knocked two-tenths of a second off his time in the 100 meters, lowering it to 10.59, a CSC all-time top-10 mark while placing third in that blistering race.
While the sprint marks were highlights, the Eagles had numerous other excellent results in numerous event at Dickinson. The CSC men posted 14 season-best marks and the women 10. Altogether, Eagles won six events and were the runners-up 10 times.
Besides Clapper’s in the 200, other Chadron State men who won events included freshmen Jacob Jefferson of Akron, Colo., in the 110 hurdles and Chadron native Chayton Bynes, who had a career outdoor-best of 14.87 meters, or 48 feet, 9 ½ inches, in the triple jump.
Bynes also was the runner-up in the long jump with a personal best indoors or outdoors of 23-11 ½. Senior Emory Yoosook of Casper was third in the long jump with his season-best 23-2.
Christopher Jennings, junior from O’Neill, had personal bests when he won the discus with a toss of 139-5 and was fourth in the hammer throw at 160-9, eight feet farther than ever before.
Two seniors from eastern Wyoming also had career-bests while placing second in their specialties. Alec Penfield of Lusk cleared 6-8 ¾ in the high jump and Greg Logsdon of Yoder ran the 400 in 50.16.
Both of Bynes’ jumps as well as Penfield’s leap are provisional national qualifiers, along with several of the Eagles’ sprint marks.
In the women’s action, Chadron State juniors Shantae Morgan of Jamaica and Caydince Groth of Cheyenne had a good day when they took first and second, respectively, in the 100 meters with career-best times of 12.22 and 12.26 seconds.
They also did well after entering other events for the first time this season. Morgan was fourth in the 400-meter sprint in 1:02.60 and Groth was third in the 400 hurdles in 1:06.35.
Another bright spot on the track was posted by freshman Samantha Rodewald of McCook, who won the 5000 meters. Another frosh, Misti Schlabach of Rapid City, came off the injured list to place third in the 800
Four other Lady Eagles also had career-bests that were good for runner-up honors Saturday. Coach Jake Gruver was definitely pleased when sophomore Megan Baloun of Rapid City went 36-9 in the triple jump.
In addition, Destiny Pelton of Fort Morgan, Colo., cleared 5-3 in the jump, Kristie Hill of Big Springs pole vaulted 10-11 ¾ and Madyson Schliep of Grand Island heaved the hammer 158-9, placing second.
