State Board Of Education Approves New Math Standards

The Nebraska State Board of Education has approved revised standards for Mathematics. State law requires updates to the standards for math, reading, writing, science, and social studies every 7 years.

The standards create the framework for teaching those subjects in Nebraska. The current math standards were approved in 2015.

The revised standards were developed with input from educators at Nebraska public and private schools covering all grades, pre-kindergarten to postsecondary.

The state standards reflect the general knowledge and skills students are expected to learn in each content area, providing guidance to teachers as they develop learning experiences for students.

The standards do not require specific curriculum, lessons, teaching techniques, or activities. All those decisions are made locally by individual school districts and classroom teachers.

The revised mathematics standards are available for review online at the Nebraska Dept of Education website www.education.ne.gov/contentareastandards/.
