Steve Walter Schomp

Retired barber, avid B.S.er and fisherman, Steve Walter Schomp, 75, of Chamberlain, South Dakota, passed away suddenly on January 2nd at his home after a courageous battle with cancer. Steve was born August 3rd, 1949 in Alliance, Nebraska to Eldon and Edyth Schomp. Steve grew up on the family farm and ranch on the Mirage Flats south of Hay Springs, Ne. He attended grade school at Mirage Flats and went on to graduate high school in Hay Springs, Ne in 1968. While growing up, Steve and his younger brother, Ben spent their summers rodeoing. They both won many saddles, trophies and buckles. In 1962, Steve was named the World Champion Little Britches All-Around cowboy in Littletown, Colorado. He and his dad, Eldon, flew to New York City where Steve was invited to be a contestant on the televised game show “To Tell the Truth”. Steve then went on to finish out his schooling at Denver Barber College and then enlisted into the USS Navy.

On May 28th, 1972, he married Joyce Cook. The young couple lived in Bridgeport, Ne. where Steve was a State Brand Inspector and Joyce taught school. In 1974, they moved to Hay Springs, Ne. where he farmed and ranched. Together, they had 3 children; Judd, Thad and Brooke.

In 1989, Steve, Joyce and their three children moved to Chamberlain, South Dakota where Steve was a well-known, sharp-skilled barber, commonly known as ‘Steady Steve’. After cutting countless heads of hair and telling thousands of long-winded stories, he retired in the year 2018.

Steve spent many weekends driving his kids to rodeos all over the state. And we all knew it was him driving down the street when we saw the mug of a labrador retriever riding as his sidekick. In his more recent years, Steve loved going to McDonalds and meeting up with friends for afternoon coffee almost every day. He often would go down to the fishing pier and visit people trying to catch a few walleye. He loved going to the grandkids’ activities as well. Steve had a hearty laugh that everyone will remember fondly.

Steve is survived by his wife, Joyce Schomp; 3 children, Judd Schomp , Thad (Devan) Schomp, and Brooke (Doug) Moeller; 7 grandchildren, Hadley and Sadie of Martin, SD, Dailynn, Josclynn and Hayes of Elkton, SD, Bristol and Berkeley of Pukwana, SD; by this brother Ben (Nancy) Schomp, of Hershey, Ne; and by many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Eldon and Edyth Schomp.
