The Dawes County Fair will honor a number of area residents this afternoon at 2:00 with the County Agricultural Hall of Fame induction ceremonies at the Grandstand.
A reception in the 4-H Building follows the ceremonies.
Dawes County is one of the few counties that has an Ag Hall of Fame. Founded in 1989, it helps remember those who have been the agricultural leaders and supporters through the years.
Enshrinements total nearly 180 , including many couples.Â
There will be 5 inductees going into the Hall today: Don Littrel, and couples Lance and Gwen Scherbarth and Bruce and Marie Wohlers. All belong to families with a long history of farming and ranching in the county.
Bruce and Marie Wohlers will also receive the Pioneer Farm Award from the Aksarben Foundation. Also known as the Century Farm Award, it goes to families who have owned their land for at least 100 years.
Today’s ceremonies also include the presentation of Dawes County Good Neighbor Awards. The award was given statewide for many years by the Knights of Ak-Sar-Ben and the Omaha World-Herald for years, but both discontinued the program.
Since good deeds are still taking place, the Dawes County Fair Board and Hall of Fame Selection Committee revived the award locally last year with Associated Brokers of Chadron sponsoring the certificates.
Those receiving the honor this year are: Howard and Teyre Felz, the Crawford Quilt Makers, Jim Moore of Whitney, Cogdill Feeds owner Willie Cogdill, and Neal Soester.
In addition to the Hall of Fame Induction Ceremonies, today’s Dawes County Fair schedule includes Lawn Mower Racing at 3:00 north of the Arena and an Antique Tractor Pull at the Grandstand at 4:00. Both are free.
