Residents in northern Box Butte County now have a new trash service.

The Solid Waste Agency of Northwest Nebraska took over servicing that region, which includes Hemingford, three weeks ago, said Director Jake Stewart. SWANN added Crawford to its service area less than a year ago.

Stewart appeared before the Chadron City Council Monday to seek approval of a lease agreement with the city as his agency prepares for its next expansion, a new baler and building that will house administrative offices. The baler construction is on schedule, and dirt work is expected to begin in approximately three weeks. The plan is to place the baler in concrete at the end of November and construct the building around it, Stewart said.

City Attorney Adam Edmund said there are still changes to the lease agreement that need to be made, so no action was taken on the item Monday. Changes include some clarification language on a few matters and the length of the lease term, he said. Stewart requested that the agreement be complete for approval at the Oct. 21 meeting, saying itโ€™s imperative that itโ€™s finalized so work does not get delayed.
