This is National Police Week, observed since 1962 by a joint resolution of Congress to pay special recognition to law enforcement officers, especially those who’ve lost their lives in the line of duty for the safety and protection of others.Â
President John Kennedy had earlier proclaimed May 15th as Peace Officers Memorial Day and Police Week is always the week of May 15th.
One of the national highlights of the week will be tomorrow night, the 36th Annual Peace Officers Memorial Candlelight Vigil on the National Mall.
The vigil will include recognition of survivors of fallen officers and the lighting of candles for the more than 22,000 officers who have died in the line of duty in all of U-S history.
New names will be singled out for recognition – officers who died last year and some who died in prior years but had not yet been added to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial.
The new names will officially be added as part of the Peace Officers Memorial Day ceremonies Wednesday at the Memorial.
Names on the memorial come from all 50 states, the District of Columbia, U.S. territories, federal, corrections, railroad, and military police agencies
