Troy Dale Jay Serbousek was born on Nov 5, 1968, at Pine Ridge, SD, but grew up in NW Nebraska.

He always considered the area home even though he spent his teenage and later years in Stuart, NE – attending high school there and working various jobs including security and ranch work.

One of his favorite memories was traveling across Nebraska and South Dakota with his stepbrother Stan Fernau, working as Stan’s one and only roadie, helping set up and take down the karaoke equipment wherever Stan played.  After Stan’s death in 2004, Troy returned to the Chadron area where he lived until the time of his death.

Troy never knew a stranger and he had a great memory, recalling people he met years ago.  He made many friends while in Chadron.  He would hang out in the local taverns almost every evening in downtown Chadron, but never drank a drop of alcohol.

Instead, you would find him drinking a Pepsi talking to anyone that wanted to visit.  Sometimes he’d challenge others to a game of pool and would even let them win sometimes.

At bar close, Troy would be a dependable sober driver willing to give a ride home to about any college student, rancher/farmer or other local that needed one, never charging a cent but always willing to accept a late night hamburger from McDonald’s as payment.

Troy loved to travel and enjoyed going on the occasional trip.  He owned several vehicles over his life and whenever he had a pickup, he was always willing to lend a hand to anyone that needed help moving.

He loved to stay up on the local news, always stopping by the local convenience stores after bar close to visit with the clerks and pick up the most recent newspapers to read later at home. Troy’s kindness and friendship will be missed by so many.

Troy had a long time relationship with Chadron PD, serving as an Explorer when he was younger and developing friendships with many officers – both past and present, often doing ride-alongs, or just stopping by and visiting especially since his brother was the 911 dispatch supervisor for many years.

Troy leaves to mourn his mother, Marlene Russell of Butte NE, siblings, Shaeleen (Darrin) Liewer of Butte, NE, Russell Jo (Kari) Serbousek of rural Hay Springs, NE, Nicolette (Lyle) Horn of Hay Springs, NE, Tony Serbousek of St Francis KS, Natalie Fernau of Plainview NE,  Joseph (Geraldine Fast Horse) Valandra, Jr. of Pine Ridge, SD; Carmelita (Keith) Doke of Des Moines, IA, Donald Hardeman of Lampasas, TX, Sara Dilley and Beka Dilley both of Fort Dodge, IA;  step-brothers Scott Fernau  (Rebecca) of Chadron NE and Steve Fernau of Atkinson, NE as well as many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father Ed A Serbousek, step-father Lyle Fernau, sister Roseann Scherbarth, brother Wayne Valandra, nephews Cody Ruegge and Michael Fernau as well as paternal and maternal grandparents.
