Tunnels Closed on I-80 West of Green River, WY After Vehicle Pileup & Reported Fatalities

oilcity.news, Casper, WY– The Sweetwater County Sheriffโ€™s Office is reporting that Interstate 80 near Green River is closed due to a multivehicle crash inside of the tunnels.

Thatโ€™s according to a social media post from the sheriffโ€™s office, which urges all travelers to avoid the I-80 tunnels near Green River due to the pileup as well as an active fire and an explosion threat.

Traffic is currently being diverted through Green River.

Stephanie Harsha, public relations specialist with the Wyoming Department of Transportation, confirmed the reports, as well as the fact that fatalities have been reported, though itโ€™s currently unknown how many.

โ€œAt approximately 11:30 a.m. today, there was a crash that involved multiple commercial vehicle trucks and multiple passenger vehicles in the tunnels near Green River,โ€ Harsha told Old City News. โ€œItโ€™s currently under investigation by the Wyoming Highway Patrol. First responders are up there as well. They are investigating fatalities and injuries but, at this point, itโ€™s unknown how many there are.โ€

Traffic is currently being diverted through Green River. There is a westbound I-80 closure in place, which will persist until the investigation is complete.

โ€œDo NOT attempt alternate routes as conditions are hazardous and emergency crews are actively working to contain the situation,โ€ the SCSO wrote.

This is still a developing situation and more updates are expected.
