According to Great Plains Fire Information page, two small fires were reported in the Black Hills on Friday, October 25th and Saturday, October 26th.
The Rocky Fire- located 4 miles northeast of Custer, SD- was reported around 8:30 Friday night. The fire was responded to by state and federal resources who swiftly controlled the blaze with a final size of only 0.1 acres.
A second blaze was reported just 12 hours later.
The Engelwood Fire- 3 miles south of Lead, SD- was responded to by state resources at roughly 8:30 Saturday morning. Much like the Rocky fire, responders quickly controlled the blaze and held it to just 0.1 acres burned.
Although the cause of the Rocky fire remains unknown, the Engelwood fire was confirmed to be caused by human activity.
The forecast through Wednesday looks promising for southwestern South Dakota to receive moisture. The public however, is still encouraged to remain aware of dry conditions as fire danger remains very high throughout all areas of the Black Hills National Forest. A Stage 2 Fire Restriction is also still in effect through Christmas Day unless otherwise rescinded.
