With most of the finals set for Sunday, Saturday was a rather slow day for the Chadron State College track and field team at the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Championship at Grand Junction. Colo.
The CSC women were shut out and the men scored in just 2 events.
Redshirt freshman Chayton Bynes of Chadron earned the Eagles a point when he placed 8th among the 24 qualifiers in the long jump. His best mark was 22 feet, 9 inches, about foot shy of his season best. It’s anticipated Bynes will finish much higher Sunday in his strongest event, the triple jump.
Chadron State’s other Saturday points came from Kaden Dower in the decathlon. Dower moved up in the second day of the 10-event competition to finish 5th and give the Eagles 4 points.
Another CSC redshirt freshman, Ryan Clapper of Yoder, Wyo., qualified for Sunday’s finals in the 200-meter by placing 5th in Saturday’s preliminaries. Other Eagles in the finals are Quincy Efeturi in the 100 dash and senior Greg Logsdon, also of Yoder, in the 400. Logsdon was 6th Friday in 400 preliminaries.
The Eagles also hope to score some points in the relays Sunday.
Although they did not qualify for the finals, CSC Coach Jake Gruver was pleased that juniors Shantae Morgan and Caydince Groth had their season-best times in the women’s 200-meter prelims. That also was true for freshman Jacob Jefferson of Akron, Colo., in the men’s 110 high hurdles.
Going into the final day, the Eagle men are 9th with 10 points while CSC is the only women’s team yet to score. Colorado Mines, Colorado Mesa, and UC-Colorado Springs are 1-2-3 in both team races.
