newschannelnebraska.com– Two separate Union Pacific train derailments occurred in Nebraska on Sunday morning, prompting emergency responses and causing disruptions in multiple areas.
The first derailment happened west of Dix, Neb., early Sunday morning, leading to power outages across western Cheyenne County and eastern Kimball County. According to authorities, approximately 60 double-stacked storage containers carrying dry goods derailed, with several other cars remaining on the tracks, blocking the railroad crossing at Kimball County Road 55.
The trainโs engineer reported feeling โa jerkโ before shutting down the engine. Upon looking back, they saw a large cloud of dust rising from the wreckage.
Firefighters worked to extinguish a fire at the scene while Union Pacificโs hazardous materials team assessed the situation. Wrecker crews began disassembling the pile of rubble around 10:30 a.m. to aid in firefighting efforts. As of 8:52 a.m., officials had not determined whether hazardous materials were involved, but authorities stated there was no threat to the public.
Despite the derailment, Interstate 80 and U.S. Highway 30 remained open. However, authorities urged travelers to avoid the area. No injuries were reported.
A second derailment occurred at 10:30 a.m. east of North Platte, near Highway 30 at the North Airport Road railroad crossing. According to the Lincoln County Sheriffโs Office, 25 train cars carrying corn derailed, blocking the main Union Pacific line, which consists of three sets of tracks.
Union Pacific confirmed no hazardous materials were involved in the derailment, and no injuries were reported. North Airport Road is closed to traffic and is expected to remain so for several days.
Emergency responders, including the North Platte Fire Department, Union Pacific Railroad, Lincoln County Sheriffโs Office, North Platte Police Department and the Department of Transportation, responded to the scene.
Union Pacific continues to investigate both derailments. Further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
