Walter Eugene Janis, 64, of Cañon City, Colorado, made his journey to the Spirit World on May 31, 2026, in the mountains near Colorado Springs, Colorado. He passed doing something he loved—working on motorcycles, surrounded by friends who had become family.
Walter was born on August 17, 1961, in Pine Ridge, South Dakota, to David Janis and Kathryn (LaDeaux) Janis. He spent his early years attending Manderson Day School, followed by one year at St. Martin’s Academy, and graduated from Gordon High School. He later earned a degree in Industrial Mechanics from Casper College.
A skilled tradesman with an unmatched work ethic, Walter began his career as a boilermaker before joining Iron Workers Local 24, where he built a respected career as an ironworker. Known for his strength, determination, and craftsmanship, he eventually retired and embraced what would become one of his greatest joys in life—being a full-time grandfather.
Walter lived life on his own terms. For many years he traveled between Colorado and Oklahoma before settling in Cañon City. He was a true road warrior who loved loud motorcycles, fast muscle cars, and the freedom that came with both. His passion for motorcycles introduced him to many of the brothers and sisters who became lifelong friends. Those relationships meant everything to him, and the people he rode beside were an important part of who he was.
Anyone who knew Walter knew he possessed immense mechanical knowledge and could fix nearly anything. He was the kind of man people sought out for advice, conversation, or simply companionship. He listened without judgment, enjoyed deep conversations, and had a remarkable ability to make people feel heard. He carried a strong sense of right and wrong, believed deeply in what it meant to be a man of integrity, and stood firmly by the people he loved.
Walter had a passion for life that was impossible to miss. Whether he was telling stories, sharing a laugh, helping a friend, or spending time with family, people often left his presence smiling. His quick wit, generous spirit, and larger-than-life personality made him unforgettable.
Above all else, Walter loved his family. His greatest pride was being a grandfather. Nothing brought him more joy than spending time with his grandchildren, sharing stories, teaching lessons, and creating memories that will live on for generations.
Though his journey on this earth has ended, Walter’s stories, laughter, wisdom, and love will continue to ride on in the hearts of all who knew him. He lived fast, rode hard, loved deeply, and leaves behind a legacy of friendship, family, and unforgettable memories.
Walter is survived by his parents, David J. Janis and Kathryn M. LaDeaux-Janis; children, Danielle M. Janis-Austin, Conan D.
