Wanblee Man Gets 8-1/2 Years For Hitting His Mother With A Shovel

A Pine Ridge Reservation man who admitted hitting his mother with a shovel, possibly contributing to her death, has been sentenced to 8-½ years in prison despite asking the judge for more prison time.

20-year-old Paige Chipps of Wanblee had pled guilty to single counts of assault with a dangerous weapon and assault resulting in serious bodily injury for his attack on 49-year old Bernadette Moves Camp in February 2021 when they were living together.

Court records show Chipps called the Oglala Sioux Tribe Department of Public Safety to report the death of his mother, with an autopsy determining she died of hypothermia.

Chipps said they had been in an argument that began in the house and continued outside, where he hit his mother and her dog with a shovel. She then left and never returned.
