The Sioux County Warriors opened their 2023-24 boys’ basketball season Thursday with a 48-30 loss in Cody-Kilgore.
The contest was a close one through the first period, with Cody-Kilgore ahead by just two, 14-12, after eight minutes. The Warriors shooting cooled off the remainder of the game, however, and they never reached double digits again in the final three quarters. The Cowboys put together middle frames of 14 points each before adding five in the final quarter. Shane Gluth led Sioux County with 13 points to open his senior season. William Skavdahl added seven and Jack Hunter hit two treys in the second half for six. Josh Perez and Cy Hughson added two points each to the Warrior tally.
The Warriors take to the hardwood with a roster of 14 this season, including four returning starters. Seniors Cy Hughson at guard, and William Skavdahl and Shane Gluth at forward, join junior returning guard Jack Hunter to lead the Warriors. Hughson averaged 7.5 points per game last season and earned second team All-Conference honors, while Gluth added 7.4 points per game and 6.9 rebounds per game. Skavdahl chipped in an average of 6.3 points per game and grabbed 6.4 rebounds per game last season. Hunter added an average of 5.2 points per game. Hunter and Gluth each earned honorable mention All-Conference recognition.
Also returning this season will be junior guards Logan Monroe and Josh Perez, both of whom saw significant playing time last season.
“We have six players who got a lot of playing time last year,” said coach Barry Swisher. “We should be improved and should be more competitive.”
The Warriors went 6-14 a year ago and with improved depth hope to see the win column increase. In addition to the six returning letterwinners and starters, sophomore guards Preston Kreman and Weston Schaefer will return. Other returners include Landen and Logen Oldaker and Taylor Kreman, who will be joined by newcomers freshmen Brody Lange and Thaine Monroe and senior Jadon Skavdahl, who joins the roster from the wrestling team.
