Sioux County went 2-1 at the Hemingford Volleyball Invite Saturday to finish in third place.

The Warriors swept Morrill in two, fending off a late challenge in the first set and coming from behind in the second to take the victory for the third-place spot.

Sioux County raced to a 22-12 lead in the opening set of their final match of the day, but Morrill 10-3 run that fell just short, allowing the Warriors a 25-22 win. The Lions went ahead early in the second and led 10-8, before an ace by Sioux County’s Tamika Eastman tied the contest at 10 and set up a Warrior 8-0 run for an 18-10 lead enroute to the 25-17 win.

The Warriors’ only loss of the day came to Hay Springs in a three-game match. Hay Springs took the first set 25-19, and led through much of the second before Sioux County tied it at 20. The Warriors used the momentum to push ahead to a 23-20 advantage and fought off a challenge by the Hawks to take the set 26-24 to tie the match. Hay Springs dominated in the third, opening with an 8-3 edge that they extended to a 20-9 gap before winning 25-15 to advance to the championship match.

Sioux County won their opening game of the tournament with a pair of 25-16 set victories over the Mitchell JV. Mitchell led early in the first, but the Warriors mounted a come-back challenge and took a 15-10 lead and went on to roll to the win. Sioux County opened the second set with a 5-0 edge and never let Mitchell get closer than three points. The contest against Mitchell will not count toward the Warriors’ official record as it came against the school’s junior varsity squad.
