Wildfires have taken center stage in the region following storms earlier in the week that produced frequent amounts of lightning.

Of the 13 reported, one of the largest happened at Samuel R. McKelvie National Forest West of Valentine.

The Bar Diamond Fire was reported around 1:30 am on Thursday morning and was controlled just three and a half hours later at 5:05 am at a size of 112 acres.

The only fire not controlled or contained according to the Great Plains Fire Information website is the Sage Creek Fire nine miles South of Wasta, SD between New Underwood and Wall on 1-90.

The fire is listed at 150 acres and was reported just after 8:30 on Wednesday evening.

Some areas may have experienced relief on Thursday night after thunderstorms dropped anywhere from a half inch to over an inch of rain from a line extending from the Black Hills to the Nebraska Pine Ridge region.
