Veterans Day is observed in a variety of ways in different communities.
In Chadron, the American Legion Auxiliary is offering a free-will donation Veterans Day lunch at the Legion Hall at 11:30 that’s also open to the public.
Wind Cave National Park is honoring veterans in a different way. Chief of Interpretation Tom Farrell says the park is offering free cave tours to everyone.
Cave Tours remain very popular with tickets on a first-come, first-served basis so Farrell recommends coming early.
All tours begin at the visitor center located a half mile off US Highway 385. Tour space is limited,
Farrell’s boss, Park Superintendent Leigh Welling, says “Taking one of these tours would be a great way to enjoy our country’s diverse cultural and natural history while honoring the men and women of our military.”
Welling also encourages people to explore the surface landscape of Wind Cave National Park by driving through the park or hiking one of its many trails.
Tom Farrell is also happy to point out that while today’s high temperature is expected to be around freezing, the temperature in Wind Cave is a steady 54-degrees. He does recommend wearing sturdy walking shoes.
