The return of winter weather has given students in the Northern Panhandle an extra long holiday weekend.
Classes were canceled today in the Chadron, Crawford, and Gordon-Rushville school districts while Hay Springs uses a 4-day school week.
Monday is the Presidents Day or Washington’s Birthday Holiday and schools in the Panhandle were already scheduled for it to be an in-service day with no classes, so students are now getting a 4-day weekend.
The weather has also canceled tonight’s Chadron High-Lakota Tech boys basketball game on the Pine Ridge Reservation and postponed 3 events in Chadron, one today and two tomorrow, one for the second month in a row.
Postponed to next Friday from 4:00-6:00 is the “Meet, Greet, and Eat Treats” reception at the Mari Sandoz Center for the “The West as They Saw It” exhibit of prints by artists and illustrators of the Old West
Keep Chadron Beautiful was scheduled for its 3rd Saturday of the Month in-town community recycling day, but just as in January, tomorrow’s has been canceled because of the problems caused by snow and ice. They’ll try again on the 3rd Saturday of March.
Postponed one week to next Saturday, Feb 23rd, is the Chadron Public Schools Band Program’s annual Rib Fundraiser.
Band Director Joe Rischling says the threat of the weather continuing into tomorrow and causing problems for both volunteers and rib purchasers is too great, so everything is being pushed back a week.
Sales are closed and those who’ve bought ribs or this year’s addition of pulled pork will be contacted next Saturday when their order is ready and can be picked up at the east entrance to the Assumption Arena by the kitchen.
