A 70-year-old woman was killed by a bison while hiking the Grace Coolidge Trail, according to South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks.
Officials said the woman was struck by the bison on Monday when the woman and her husband came across a group of bull bison on the trail. She was struck in her back and died later that day.
The bison involved in the incident were taken away from the area and park staff said they are reviewing safety measures along the trail.
Park officials remind visitors that bison are wild animals and should always be treated with caution on the trails and hikers should always keep a safe distance from them especially along ridge lines and corners.
