The South Dakota Highway Patrol says an 83-year-old woman was killed in a freak accident Friday morning near Sturgis when her car was hit by a boat on a trailer that had detached from the pickup pulling it. Names have not been released.
The safety chains failed to control the trailer and it went into the southbound lane, still carrying the boat, where it hit the woman’s car. The trailer, boat, and car all came to rest on the southbound shoulder and in the west ditch.
The woman was pronounced dead at the scene while the driver and occupant of the pickup, both 44-year old men, were unhurt. The Highway Patrol says the investigation into the accident is continuing.
