Wreaths Across America is offering families whose loved ones are laid to rest at Omaha National Cemetery a time to lay a wreath on their veteransโ headstone Thursday, December 12, from 10 a.m.-2 p.m., two days prior to the nationwide event, December 14, in which volunteers cover the gravesites of those who served their country.
โWeโre incredibly grateful for the volunteers who have honored our fallen heroes in yearsโ past,โ Wreaths Across America Spokeswoman Mary Blodgett said. โThis year, we want to try something new by allowing families an opportunity to lay a wreath at their veteranโs headstone ahead of national Wreaths Across America Day. We understand the importance of families paying their respects and reflecting on the lives of their loved ones and want to honor their wishes by allowing them a separate time to be on site.โ
Now in her 20th year coordinating Wreaths Across America efforts in Nebraska, Blodgett has seen the number of wreaths necessary to honor fallen veterans jump exponentially. When Omaha National Cemetery opened in 2016, 250 wreaths were requested. This year, more than 4,000 wreaths are needed to ensure that every veteran is recognized and remembered prior to the holiday season. With 500-600 burials expected annually, donations are necessary to meet the growing need.
For centuries, fresh evergreens have been used as a symbol of honor and have served as a living tribute renewed annually. Wreaths Across America believes the tradition represents a living memorial that honors veterans, active-duty military and their families. When each wreath is placed the service member’s name is said out loud, ensuring their memory lives on.
Wreaths Across America is a national nonprofit whose year-long mission is to, โremember the fallen, honor those who serve and teach our children the value of freedom.โ Each year, millions of volunteers gather in local, state and national cemeteries across all 50 states, at sea and abroad, to pay tribute to veterans.
