3 Accidents, 4 Deaths In 3 Days In Black Hills

     The end of last week was a deadly one on the streets and roads of the Black Hills with accidents on 3 straight days claiming 4 lives. No names have been released from any of the crashes.

     The first death occurred Thursday night about 7:00 in a single-vehicle rollover accident at an intersection on the southwest side of Rapid City. The driver was the lone occupant and was pronounced dead at the scene.

      Witnesses told police the car had been traveling at a high rate of speed while swerving in and out of traffic when the driver missed a curve. The car left the pavement, bounced off a utility pole and stop sign, crossed the other street, landed upside down in a landscaped area, and caught fire.

       When first-responders arrived, they found several bystanders trying to put out the fire. The responders got the man out and began emergency life-saving efforts, but the man was pronounced dead at the scene. Speed was listed as the cause of the crash.

      A 42-year old man was killed in a single-vehicle accident about 9:45 Friday night in Meade County northeast of Black Hawk. The Highway Patrol says an SUV was apparently northbound when it left the roadway to the right, went into the ditch, and rolled. The driver, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was ejected and died at the scene.

      Two people were killed a little before 2:00 Saturday afternoon when a pickup and a car collided on Hwy 34 about 2-miles west of Whitewood. The Patrol says the driver of the southbound sedan crossed the centerline into the path of a westbound pickup. 

     The vehicles collided in the westbound lane with the pickup ending up in a ditch and the car in the eastbound lane, The 24-year-old male driver of the was ejected as the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene. 

      An 87-year-old female passenger in the pickup also died at the scene while the 55-year old male driver suffered serious, non-life-threatening injuries. The accident remains under investigation.
