The commander F.E. Warren Air Force Base in Cheyenne says people under her command and their families are encountering racism in the city.

Colonel Catherine Barrington of the 90th Missile Wing, children of Air Force personnel have been called a racial slur at school and gotten punished because it led to fights.

Colonel Barrington, who is white, has asked for support in addressing the racism issue from Cheyenne Mayor Patrick Collins and school Superintendent Margaret Crespo.

Command Chief Master Sgt Nicholas Taylor, the top non-commissioned officer at the base, says many of his fellow minority airmen report being treated differently in the Cheyenne community when they’re out of uniform.

The 90th Missile Wing has some 4,200 military, civilian, and contract workers at Warren.
