Fall River County Voters Approve Ban On Uranium Mining

Loading

Fall River County voters have declared uranium mining a nuisance and have banned it. The initiated measured trailed early, but wound up winning with 56% of the vote – 1,991 to 1,537

The measure almost certainly faces one or more court challenges, likely beginning with whether the county has the authority to ban a practice allowed under state law.

In the race for State Representative District 30, incumbent Trish Ladner and fellow Republican Dennis Krull won the two seats with 43% and 40% respectively. Democrat Bret Swanson trailed with 17%.

In statewide measures, expanding Medicaid eligibility was a winner with 56% while legalization of recreational marijuana lost 53-47%.

South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem defeated Democratic Representative Jamie Smith for reelection with 62%, U-S Senator John Thune won a 4th term with 70% in a 3-way race, and GOP Congressman Dusty Johnson claimed his 3rd term with 77% against a Libertarian.
