A Rapid City police officer wounded, but did not kill, a man holding a knife to the throat of a convenience store clerk during a robbery around noon Friday.Â
Even after being shot, the man held onto his knife until he was tased by police.
The clerk was not injured. The suspect was taken to a local hospital, but his condition has not been released.
Rapid City Police Chief Don Hedrick says some of the witnesses at the convenience store reported hearing the suspect make statements about wanting the police to come, suggesting it may have been a suicide by cop incident
Chief Hedrick also says a bystander acted as a Good Samaritan and tried to wrestle the knife away from the, but failed. He was also unhurt.
The South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation is now in charge of the shooting, the 6th officer-involved shooting in Rapid City in the past 12 months.
