Quentrevion Campbell fell in the 133-pound National Championship match during the final day of the NCAA Division II National Championships, finishing as the national runner-up and an All-American Saturday.

Campbell, a redshirt junior from Tifton, Georgia, is the highest placing wrestler Chadron State has had since head coach Brett Hunter won a national title in 2009.

“Obviously you want to see Quen winning and bring the NCAA Championship home, but it wasn’t our day,” Hunter said. “Quen had one of the most impressive seasons in CSC history, Chadron State College should be proud of his effort.”

Gavin Quiocho, the #3 ranked 133-pounder, was Campbell’s opponent in the championship match and the eventual national champion.

Quicho knocked off the 6th and 7th ranked wrestlers on his way to the title match.

In the championship, Quiocho scored an early takedown but it did not take Campbell long to earn an escape. After choosing to start bottom in the second period, Campbell scored another escape, tying the score at two entering the final period.

Quiocho would follow in Campbell’s footsteps, also choosing bottom position. An escape for the Glenville State wrestler gave him a 3-2 lead.

Campbell kept shooting which led to a second stalling call for his opponent, tying the match at three.

Quiocho held more than a minute of riding time though and Campbell was unable to score another point, ending the match 4-3 in the opponents favor.

Quiocho, who finished his season with a 42-5 record, was the first All-American and first National Champion in Glenville State wrestling history.

Campbell’s route to the championship match included two decisions and a major decision.

After winning with two decisions in round one and the quarterfinals, Campbell started his day with a 15-5 major decision in the semifinals.

His opponent, Devin Flannery of Millersville, was the #5 ranked 133-pounder in the nation and had a record of 34-6.

After holding a 2-1 lead at the end of period one, Flannery earned an escape to tie the match at two with 1:46 left in the period two.

Campbell managed a takedown with 1:01 remaining and followed it up with four near-fall points. Campbell would add more near-fall points and a takedown in the final period to earn the major decision.

Campbell, who finished with a 21-2 record this season, is the 49th All-American wrestler at Chadron State College.
