Playing with special spunk and energy but without 3 primary players because of injuries and without its suspended head coach, the Chadron State College women’s basketball team hung on for a 70-67 victory over South Dakota Mines in a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference game in Chadron on Saturday afternoon.

Neither team ever led by more than 7 points.  Mines was ahead 33-32 at halftime and 44-43 after 3 quarters.  The Eagles took the lead early in the 3th on Allison Olsen’s long 3-pointer and led the rest of the way with some clutch shooting that included going 9-of-9 at the free throw line over the final 4:16 and 4-4 in the last 15 seconds.

Chadron State had its biggest lead at 64-57 after Liberty Line nailed a trey with 1:28 to play, but the Hardrockers hit three 3-pointers in the final 45 seconds. Two were by all-star Piper Bauer and the other came from Lauren Herman with 6 seconds remaining.

The Eagles were fouled repeatedly to stop the clock and survived the long-range bombardment with free throws as Line, Olsen and Kyra Tanabe each sank a pair of charity shots in the final 30 seconds.

Mines’ Bauer was the game’s leading scorer with 25 points, including 7-13 on 3-pointers, while teammate Savea Mansfield had 15 points and a game-high 10 rebounds. Herman added 10 points.

Chadron State got 15 points that included a trio of 3-pointers from both Megan Counts and Line while Tanabe scored 13 and Olsen 10.

Each team finished with 9 treys. Mines had 22 total field goals, one more than the Eagles, but CSC was 19-of-21 at the line and the visitors 14-of-17.

The Eagles are now 6-12 for the season and 4-10 in the RMAC. Mines is 5-14 and 5-8.

Shay Powers, Olivia Waufle and Awati Akoi are expected back from their injuries and coach Travis Brewster has now finished his 3-game RMAC suspension for the Eagles forfeiting their game last month at Adams State.
