A handful of student athletes made the trip to Gothenburg Saturday for the Nebraska Middle School State Track and Field Meet.
The highlight for the northern panhandle came when eighth grader Grace Holmgren, running for Sioux County came home in fourth in the 1600 with a time of 5:39.02. The top place finish on the boys side was a pair of fifth place medals with eighth grader Braxton Spicer out of Hay Springs getting fifth in the 200 and eighth grader out of Chadron Middle School Gabriel Scoggan getting fifth in discus.
Other finalist competing athletes on the girls side saw CMS eighth grader Havyn Huffman getting 16th in the 400 while Holmgren got 17th in the 800. There were two relay teams competing, both from Chadron Middle School. The 4×800 team of eighth graders Kinleigh Yada, Havyn Huffman along with seventh graders Aalyiah Stehle and Tenley Owsley got sixth place while the 4×400 team of Yada, Huffman, Abigail Hoffman and Ellianna Schuckman got 11th.
The boys side only had Spicer from Hay Springs and Scoggan from Chadron. Spicer added a sixth place finish in the 100, ninth in the 400 and 15th in long jump to go along with his fifth place finish in the 200.
Scoggan had an eighth place finish in shot put to go along with his fifth in discus.
