Big 3rd Quarter Sends CSC Women Past York

             The Chadron State College women’s basketball team led 36-30 at halftime, then outscored the York College Panthers 25-12 in the third quarter enroute a 71-59 victory in the Chicoine Center in Chadron on Monday night. 

              Junior guard Olivia Waufle was among the Eagles’ leaders, scoring a career-high 19 points and collecting seven rebounds. She made eight of 11 field goal shots and sank three of four free throws.

              Sophomore Liberty Line added 13 points while scoring in double figures for the first time in her young career. She was six of 10 from the field. Junior forward Shay Powers also tallied a dozen points and matched Waufle’s seven rebounds for game-high honors.

              The eight assists and five steals turned in by sophomore Kyra Tanabe, the Eagles’ primary ballhandler, were other impressive numbers. Another soph, Megan Counts, meshed four of five field goal shots and grabbed six rebounds.

              First-Year Head Coach Jarvis Brewster said he was pleased with his team’s ball movement, cohesiveness and most of its defensive play. 

              “I’m happy with our progress and the way we’re learning to play together,” Brewster said. “We’ve got to keep going strong when something goes wrong. Sometimes we kind of freeze when that happens. We can’t stop and think about it.  We’ve got forget it and keep on playing.”

              Now 2-1, the Eagles were 30 of 64 from the field for 47% and outrebounded the Panthers 44-30, York shot 39% from the field. Neither team did well from long range. CSC was just two of 16 and York three of 12.

              The Panthers were led in scoring by senior Arcadya Conway’s 11 points and six rebounds. Three more Panthers—Imanui Honey, Clara Romeo and Ashley Rubio—scored eight points apiece.

              The Eagles will visit Nebraska-Kearney this Saturday for 2 o’clock contest and then open their Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference schedule on Dec. 1 and 2 to play at Colorado State-Pueblo and New Mexico Highlands.
