43rd District State Senator Tom Brewer of Gordon says he will soon undergo treatment for a rare form of cancer that he has faced before.
Brewer says a series of medical tests this spring revealed that his hairy cell leukemia had returned and that he would need chemotherapy to treat it.
Brewer says he plans to take some time off from his duties for treatment, and will have to cancel or reschedule some of his upcoming events.
Brewer disclosed his initial diagnosis of the cancer in 2014, when he challenged 3rd District Congressman Adrian Smith in the Republican primary.
He was elected to the legislature in 2016, defeating incumbent Al Davis of Hyannis, then won a second term last year.
Hairy cell leukemia is a rare, slow-growing cancer that’s generally treatable and has a high survival rate.
