The City of Chadron is spraying for mosquitoes again tonight, the third straight night of frontal attack on the tiny bloodsuckers.
The schedule is the same as the last two nights with spraying to start around 7:30 and end around 9:30 or an hour before and an hour after sunset.
Parks and Cemetery Superintendent Scott Schremmer has been applying larvicide to areas of standing water for several weeks, but the impact of the pesticide was sharply reduced by rainy weather.
City Manager Tom Menke says while three straight nights of spraying may seem unusually heavy to some people, it isn’t.
The last few summers were dry and the larvicide applications were very effective, sharply reducing the need for spraying.
Menke continues to remind Chadron residents to do their part in the battle by cutting tall grass and weeds that can shield mosquitoes from the spray and by eliminating standing water where they can breed.
Seems like the only time the street lanes are painted and mosquitoes are sprayed for is around Fur Trade Days each year. Just an observation.
