The Chadron State College track and field team will host its annual Don Holst Open Meet on Saturday (Jan. 28) in the Nelson Physical Activity Center.  The field events will begin at 11 a.m. and the running events at 1:30, CSC Coach Seth Mischke said.

Black Hills State and South Dakota Mines will provide the competition.

Last year’s meet was outstanding.  Two records were set by Chadron State entries.  The men’s 4×400 relay team ran that event in 3 minutes, 19.99 seconds, about 2 ½ seconds faster than ever before, and the Eagles’ Jourdaine Cerenil high jumped 5-6 ½, breaking the old record by a half inch.

Cerenil will be high jumping again Saturday.

Other event winners from last year expected to compete for the Eagles again on Saturday include Carlie Collier, who won both the 60 and 200 meters; sprinter Quincy Efeturi in the men’s 200 meters; and weight thrower Dan Reynolds.

In addition, Kyla Sawvell, who won both the women’s shot put and weight throw last year while competing for Black Hills State, is now using her final year of eligibility at Chadron State while working on a master’s degree in a program Black Hills State does not offer.

The meet the Eagles are hosting Saturday dates back to 2003, when it was called the Chadron State Twilight Meet.  It was renamed the Don Holst Open Meet in 2016 to honor Holst, who was the Eagles’ track and field coach for seven years in the late 1960s and early ‘70s and wrote books after interviewing about 40 on Olympics winners and pro football standouts.
