For the second straight Sunday, a Husker football coach has been fired.
This time it was defensive coordinator Erik Chinander. Chinander came to Nebraska with Scott Frost from Central Florida, where he was also defensive coordinator
Asked after Saturday’s big loss to Oklahoma whether he planned any changes to his staff, Interim Head Coach Mickey Joseph said “I can’t see that right now,” but some 18 hours later Chinander was out.
In comments similar to those by AD Trev Albert in firing Frost a week earlier, Joseph thanked Chinander for his work and dedication but said “it’s in the best interest of the football program to take the leadership of the defense in a different direction.”
Through 3 games, the Huskers are giving up an average of 35.5 points, 280 yards passing, and 233 yards rushing per game. That ranks them 114th nationally in points allowed, 124th in rushing defense, and 115th against the pass.
Joseph named special teams coordinator Bill Busch as defensive coordinator for the rest of the season. Busch is in his 3rd stint with the Huskers, beginning as a graduate assistant 1990-93, then as an assistant with the secondary and special teams.
He’s worked under 3 national championship head coaches – Urban Meyer, Ed Orgeron and Tom Osborne, and spent 3 years at Wisconsin, 2 at Rutgers, and 1 at Ohio State. Busch was also defensive coordinator at Utah State and co-coordinator at Rutgers
