Funeral services for 85-year old Dr Edward Metz of Crawford are Friday, July 15, at 2:00 at the United Methodist Church in Crawford.

A memorial has been established for Ponderosa Villa, Crawford United Methodist Church, or the Crawford Rural Fire Department. Donations may be sent in care of Chamberlain Chapel, PO Box 970, Chadron, NE 69337.

Edward Allen Metz was born November 30, 1936, in Philadelphia, PA, to George Edward Metz and Emma Dolqueist Metz. He passed away peacefully on July 6, 2022, at Ponderosa Villa in Crawford.

Known to family and friends as Allen, he graduated in 1954 from Frankfort High School. He received a bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering with a minor in Mining from Drexel University. More importantly, he was married and raised 3 daughters during this time.

Ed went on to achieve his Doctorate in Medicine from the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine and went on to practiced medicine in Pennsylvanis in Harrisburg and Port Allegany.

There he met Gay Gilmore. Their love for medicine made a strong connection and they married November 23, 1978, in Nazlini, AZ. Their union led to the adoption of two boys that completed their family. They went on to have medical practices in Sioux City, IA, Ganado, AZ, Kemmerer, WY, and finally in Crawford,

Ed entered the military in December 1958 by enlisting in the National Guard in Philadelphia, but later received a direct commission in the Medical Corps of the US Army Reserve.

He was promoted to colonel on March 11, 1997, and earned numerous military awards and achievements before retiring from the military as a full bird colonel on November 30th, 2000 – his 64th birthday.

He was honored by the State of South Dakota, which named that day “Colonel Edward A. Metz Day”. He served his country for 21 years

Ed is survived by his wife of 44 years, Gay Gilmore-Metz, his 5 children Donna Metz of Laurel, MD, Joanne Metz (Harvard) Hitchcock of Olean, NY, Barbara Metz (Clyde) Franklin of Omaha, NE, Franklin Gilmore-Metz of Chicago, IL, and Timothy (Aubrey) Gilmore-Metz of Crawford.

He is also survived by his 7 grandchildren: Jennifer Spicer, Jamie Molyneaux, Tyrone Franklin, Andrea Lopez, Gabrielle Franklin, Jackie Hitchcock, Roman Gilmore-Metz, and his 11 great-grandchildren: Carter Molyneaux, Silas Molyneaux, Lilly Spicer, Norah Franklin, Etta Franklin, Sallie Franklin, Ophelia Molyneaux, Ivy Spicer, Coraline Carucci, Jaylen Lopez and Nya Lopez.
