Eagle Volleyball Ventures Over The Rockies This Weekend

The Chadron State College volleyball team is on the road in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference once again this weekend, as they take on No. 19 Colorado Mesa University (17-4, 12-2 RMAC) on Friday October 28th, and Westminster College (5-17, 2-11 RMAC) on Saturday October 29th.

CSC enters the weekend ranked 11th in the RMAC standings.

The Eagles are facing a defense in Colorado Mesa that ranks fifth in the conference with 2.01 blocks per set – only .01 behind CSC. The Mavericks are led by Tye Wedhorn with 68 blocks. The next threat at the net defensively for CMU is Erin Curl with 48 blocks.

Kerstin Layman leads the back end of the defense for the Mavericks with 5.13 digs per set, which ranks No. 2 in the RMAC. As a team, Mesa is just ahead of the Eagles at fifth in the league with 16.13 digs per set.

However, the biggest part of the Maverick’s game is their offense.

CMU ranks No. 2 in the RMAC in kills per set, with 14.43. Sierra Hunt and Sydney Leffler lead the way with 3.30 and 3.14 on the season respectively. CMU also has the second-ranked hitter in terms of hitting percentage in the RMAC in Savannah Spitzer with a .397 on the season. The Mavericks also have Wedhorn hitting .318.

Westminster’s offense is led by Mailei Myers who is hitting .285 on the season, ranking her 14th in the RMAC. The Griffins have three other players hitting over .200. Westminster is 10th in the RMAC in hitting percentage with a .165. Lydia Parkinson Miller has averaged 2.85 kills on the season, while the Griffins have managed 14.28 per set as a team, ranking them 12th in the RMAC.

Defensively, the Griffins are laying down 1.72 blocks per set, putting them in the middle of the league at ninth. The defense is led by Myers, with 0.76 per set on the season. The back half of the defense is led by Alanna Lee, with 3.78 digs per set, and Leila Cornejo has recorded 2.37. As a team the Griffins have 14.19 per set, which places them eighth in the conference.

The Eagles are looking to get their first win against the Mavericks since 2012.

In the last six matches between Chadron State and Westminster, the home team has won each time. In the only match to break that rule, CSC won the inaugural match in the RMAC series 3-0 in Salt Lake City. The Eagles lead the series 4-3.
