Edna Darlene Spencer was born Jan 6, 1932 – the sixth child born to George and Inez Ferguson at Ansley, NE. She passed away January 24, 2022, at Pioneer Manor in Hay Springs.

Edna, who always enjoyed school and learning new things, graduated from Ansley High School in 1949.

She met Jerry Spencer through her brother, George, while he was working on a ranch near Brewster. They fell in love and were married on May 29, 1949, when Edna was only 17.

Edna and Jerry ranched northeast of Brewster and they were blessed with three children – Kathy, Roy and Julie.

Their first home didn’t have electricity, phone service or running water (unless they ran after it). In 1954, they built a basement house that was their home for the next 54 years.

Edna was the Blaine County Clerk and Blaine County Assessor for 35 years, and played the organ and piano at the Brewster United Church of Christ for 40 years.

Edna enjoyed the ranch life, playing cards with neighbors, camping and following their kids in all their school and 4-H activities. They also raised a granddaughter, Tanya Lynn.

In 2002, Edna and Jerry sold their ranch to a neighbor and moved to Burwell, NE. After 4 years, they wanted to be close to daughter Kathy and they moved to Chadron, NE.

Jerry passed away in 2018 after 69 years of marriage. Edna then moved to Pioneer Manor in Hay Springs and lived there until her death

Edna is survived by daughter Kathy Suhr (Roger), son Roy Spencer (Peggy) and daughter Julie Lanham; four grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren.

Chamberlain Chapel of Chadron is in charge of arrangements for Edna Spencer.
