Memorial services for 76-year old Ernest John Bird Necklace will be held this spring in SIoux City Iowa. 

Ernest John Bird Necklace was born on February 13, 1946 at the Old Hospital in Pine Ridge, SD to Ernest & Emma Bird Necklace. He passed away from brain cancer on January 7, 2023 at home in Sioux City, IA with 3 of his boys by his side.

Ernest or John was an electrician and wired homes in Eagle Butte, SD in the 1970’s. He later attended an auto body school in California and in 1986 received his AA Degree from the Nebraska Indian Community College in Winnebago.

In 1983, Ernest started to carve wood and bone art pieces. He eventually became a full time, self-employed artist in Sioux City while raising 3 sons; Jesse, Jordan and Jonathan.

All together, Ernest had 8 children: 3 girls and 5 boys.

He loved to read and watch Jeopardy everyday! He was always optimistic and his humor will be dearly missed.

Arrangements for Ernest John Bird Necklace are entrusted to the Sioux Funeral Home of Pine Ridge.

  1. this is for john birdnecklace and how his boys including richard crosby his (first son), or stepson ,I’m sorry but I’ve notice that Richard Crosby wasn’t included as a son because I knew his mom (Mary blackhawk) and I knew john bird necklace raised him all his life and Richard always called john dad and Richard was always there checking on his dad john and seems like they would of at least included Richard cause to me all kids even stepkids are included in johns life and not left out. R.I.P. john bird necklace your boys cared and loved you.

  2. John also had a son, Jeremiah, aged 49 living in High Ridge Missouri with his daughter Anna, aged 12, and daughters Joanna (decreased age 18 mos), Josie (last known in Minnesota) and Jacque aged 46, in Kansas City.

  3. John did not have any contact with the first 7 kids he had, including 3 step sons, with Mollie Blacksmith. He fathered 4 children with her, 1 boy and 3 girls.
    The photo is of John with Joanna Kayton, his daughter who passed away of leukemia at age 18 months.
